The Wurlitzer collection represents the Golden Age of jukeboxes because of their innovative styling and influence on American culture. The 1940s were a time when jukeboxes were the primary entertainment available in diners, malt shops and taverns because television had not yet been invented. And, unlike radio, you could replay your favorite songs. The Greek, gothic and renaissance designs of bright colors and curves reflected the festive mood following World War II.
All 50 jukeboxes are original and have never been restored. The only work done was when a technician was brought in from Chicago to the Imperial Palace and worked 10 hours per day for two months to switch all the machines from 220 to 110 volts.
So, why are these classic music boxes nestled among the classic cars at The Auto Collections?
The jukeboxes belong to an avid car collector in Switzerland who has spent the past 20 years gathering each piece for his set. Our friend is now ready to let someone else with a passion for jukeboxes enjoy these beautiful, rare machines, said Rob Williams, The Auto Collections general manager.
