Interview Tips

Phone Interviews are often conducted as a preliminary review of a candidate’s skills and abilities. This is usually done when the candidate lives in another location and/or the hiring manager travels extensively to ensure there’s a potential match prior to incurring costs for travel. These interviews are as important as traditional face-to-face meetings and are often used to help recruiters narrow their list of prospects. Here are a few tips to help secure an in-person meeting:

  • Eliminate/Minimize distractions You should plan to be in a quiet place where you can focus your full attention on the interviewer. If possible, avoid using a cell phone. It’s okay to ask to reschedule if the call was unexpected.
  • Sharpen your verbal skills – Since eye contact and body language won’t be a factor during a phone interview, candidates are evaluated primarily by what they say. In addition to professionalism (no slang), recruiters listen for enthusiasm and cultural fit.
  • Prepare in advance Spend a few minutes prior to the interview reviewing how your experience matches the position requirements. Keep notes and your resume close. Research the company and market.

In person interviews require the same preparation and verbal skills as phone interviews. Here are a few additional tips to keep in mind:

  • Dress for Success Make a great first impression. Pay attention to all facets of grooming. Business attire is usually best for interviews. Wear something clean and conservative if you do not have a suit.
  • During the Interview Arrive a few minutes early and be polite to everyone you meet. Shake hands firmly and make eye contact as much as possible. Strong listening skills are equally important to speaking skills during an interview.
  • Interview Questions - Spend a few minutes prior to the interview reviewing how your experience matches the position requirements. Be prepared to address some standard interview questions as well as ask a few of your own.
  • Interview Don’ts :
    • Don’t be late
    • Don’t exaggerate or embellish answers
    • Don’t criticize present or former employers
    • Don’t stray off the point
    • Don’t interrupt the interviewer
    • Don’t inquire about salary or time off
  • Closing the Interview State your interest in the position and thank the interviewer for his/her time. Even if you determine the job is not a fit for you, always remain professional.
