HARRAH’S CORPORATE ENERGY & ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCE CONSERVATION PROGRAMS
Company-Wide Initiatives - Code of Commitment: In February 2008, incorporated environmental sustainability into Harrah’s Code of Commitment, a 10 year industry-leading pledge of corporate responsibility to Harrah’s guests, Harrah’s employees, and to the communities where Harrah’s operates.
- EPA’s Climate Leaders: February 2008, became the first casino company to join the EPA’s industry-government partnership of leading firms committed to targeted, measurable reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. Harrah’s is also the first and only gaming company to win an EPA Quality Award.
- CodeGreen Teams: Formed employee partnership teams at many Harrah’s properties to further focus on reducing the use of natural resources, conserving energy, and promoting reuse and recycling; also created a corporate-level steering committee.
- Corporate Energy & Environmental Services: In 2003, established a commitment to conservation with the formation of a corporate-level function to identify and implement energy and water conservation projects across Harrah’s portfolio of properties.
Sustainable Success Stories - 74 major conservation projects at individual Harrah’s properties, including demonstration programs to:
- Install energy efficient indoor and outdoor lighting, and reduce lighting usage;
- Improve efficiency and effectiveness of air-handling systems;
- Retrofit equipment with energy-efficient upgrades;
- Reduce water consumption in laundry facilities;
- Upgrade guestroom thermostats;
- Replace technological controls with advanced energy-saving sensors;
- Install lower-water flow controls in guest areas;
- Incorporate comprehensive recycling programs; and
- Train employees on environment-friendly practices.
- Rio Hotel co-generation: a five megawatt co-generation facility was installed at the Rio, generating and using electricity on-site and recapturing waste heat for hot water requirements.
- Rated one of the cleanest burning natural gas co-generation facilities in the nation.
- Reduces energy losses through transmission and markedly improves on-site energy efficiency.
- Corporate energy savings: energy conservation efforts at the corporate level alone have:
- Reduced electricity consumption by over 100 million kilowatt-hours per year (enough to power 10,000 average homes per year).
- Reduced natural gas consumption by over 1.6 million therms per year (enough for 6000 average residential gas users).
- Establishing baseline for future reduction: In conjunction with the EPA’s Climate Leaders program, Harrah’s is conducting a company-wide inventory of energy and resource usage and determining which programs can be ramped up to most effectively provide significant environmental conservation and sustainability benefits.
Current Annual Resources Saved Annual resource savings from existing and completed conservation programs total over $10 million, and include: - Avoided emissions of over 155.7 million pounds of carbon dioxide per year
- Avoided emissions of over 250,000 pounds of sulfur dioxide per year
- Avoided emissions of over 200,000 pounds of nitrous oxides per year
The avoided carbon dioxide is equivalent to the following: | Passenger Cars Not Driven for One Year | | 12,950 | | Roundtrip Flights: Los Angeles to New York | | 81,170 | | Acres of Pine or Fir Forests Storing Carbon for One Year | | 58,850 | | Barrels of Oil | | 164,440 |
